Now that the holidays are winding down, we’re all letting out a collective sigh of relief.
No matter how much you might love the holidays, they can be stressful, especially with all the preparation that goes into them. There’s cooking and cleaning, there’s making sure you haven’t forgotten anyone on your gift list, and then of course, there’s spending all that money.
And when life throws a wrench in your carefully laid plans for getting everything done… well, it can feel like everything is collapsing onyou.
But luckily, as one harried holiday shopper learned, there are some people in the world who are willing to lift that weight off with simple gestures that have the power to make all the difference. And sometimes, they don’t even stick around to get a thank you.
Zara Chowdhury was out shopping with her son to pick up some last-minute presents shortly before Christmas. She was shopping for some bath and beauty products at Lush, but when it came time to pay, she found her card was declined.
She and the cashier tried again, but to no avail; the card simply wouldn’t go through. With no other option, Chowdhury left her purchases on the counter and ran to an ATM to get some cash.
But when she returned, she found her items all bagged up and ready to go, with a mystery note written on the paid-in-full receipt.

When Zara Chowdhury’s card was declined while holiday shopping with her son, she was understandably stressed. She ran out to get some cash from an ATM, but when she returned, she found this note on the receipt of her bagged items:
“I know how stressful this time of year can be. Have a great Christmas! Bethany XXX”
Chowdhury’s gifts, which were the nicebath products stocked by international company Lush, were completely paid for by this mysterious and benevolent Bethany. In U.S. dollars, her purchase came to about $53.
When she asked the cashier who had helped her out so unexpectedly, the cashier was unsure.
Chowdhury even looked around the store for Bethany, but was unable to find her. So she took to Facebook in the hopes that Bethany would see her post and know how grateful she was.
Chowdhury told her story in a public Facebook post.
“I was in shock. I went round looking for her [and] I couldn’t find her. I just wanted to say thank you and I really appreciate what she has done! Goes to show there are some really nice people in the world,” she wrote.
She also requested that people share the post in caseBethany would be able to see it.
People were touched by the gesture, and some, like Karen, even used it as an example of the true spirit of Christmas.
“Stories like this are what I’ve been explaining to my 7-year-old grandson and the meaning of Christmas,” she said. “Well done to that lovely person and a merry Christmas to you all.”
Others were curious as to who this Bethany was, and some even tried to venture a guess as to her identity.
Chowdhury also left a personal message for Bethany, and also mentioned that she respected the possibility that Bethany preferred to stay anonymous.
“Bethany, if I can’t thank you personally or you would like to be kept unknown and can see this post just hope you know how grateful and thankful I am for your generosity and kindness…”
And some other readers agreed. In response to someone offering to do some sleuthing, reader Marie suggested that staying out of the limelight made the gesture all the better.
“Whichever Bethany it is…she’ll want to remain anonymous,” she said. “Just spreading a lil Christmas cheer, that’s all.”
Now that the holidays are over, it’s great to remember these little acts of kindness to carry us through the rest of the year!SHARE this one to inspire your loved ones.
